When you write a reply, is the reply box shaded yellow? If so, you should see a "Use Rich Text Editor" link underneath. That should return you to the normal text editor.

Try this then: At the top of the page, hover your mouse over your user name and select "Preferences". In the "Options" section, check the box that says "Use the rich text editor to create and edit messages" and see if that makes a difference.
